How does the human vision seamlessly adapt to ever-changing environments, while our computer vision systems tend to err even in the presence of the slightest of changes? How do ant colonies find food at the most unexpected places, without any central control and with minimal computational resources? Through evolution, nature has been “designing” these algorithmic wonders for more than 3.5 billion years. My research involves investigating such algorithms in nature, with the goal of distilling out new algorithmic insights that are applicable to the current engineering systems such as molecular robots and robust machine learning systems.
