Join other grad students to explore a different mindset and process to structure your day. Quick Bytes: Self-Compassion Part 2: Practicing It Without Compromising Success

In this follow-up to our introduction to self-compassion, we will: discuss how to practice self-compassion as students without compromising academic success; explore self-compassion in leadership and teams; take a self-compassion inventory from lead researcher Kristen Neff; have Q&A around practical challenges to practicing self-compassion; and do some real-time meditative practice.

Quick Bytes: Self-Compassion in Academia

Struggle is part of the grad school experience. Difficult moments are part of the human experience. How we handle those difficult moments can be the difference between a downward spiral of isolation, and a confident step toward meaningful work. From this workshop, participants will learn what self-compassion is, current research addressing the ways self-compassion protects ambition, and gain tools for how to practice self-compassion.

The Terman Engineering Library is pleased to have therapy dogs again this quarter. Please join us in the Y2E2 Courtyard on the second Thursday of the month from 3-4pm. Letters to a Young Engineer: Janna Glaze, Mechanical Engineer (Intel)

Dr. Janna Glaze is a mechanical engineer researcher working for the Intel Corporation in the San Francisco Bay Area where she develops sensors that allow for a variety of worldwide technologies to work. She earned her bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with honors from UC Merced (2012) and her master’s and doctoral degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University (2016 and 2018). In 2012, while working for UNICEF Africa, Janna developed a pneumonia sensor that has become part of pneumonia-prevention kits now used.

Stanford is organizing a two-day conversation (February 3 and 4) on mental health and well-being for our entire campus community — students, postdocs, staff, and faculty. Through a series of workshops, roundtables, and presentations, we want to shine a light on mental health and well-being, dispel any stigmas associated with mental illness, and empower our community members with tools that will help them manage stress, build resilience, support others, and ultimately, thrive.
