Stem cells play critical roles in physiological and pathological states. Unfortunately, our understanding of stem cells in human tissues is limited by methods that require specialized knowledge or laborious functional experiments. Precise identification of stem cells and their phenotypic states would provide new opportunities to understand stem cells. I am developing novel computational models to reliably predict stem cells from single-cell sequencing data. Also, I am working on identifying cancer stem cells and understanding patient heterogeneity in breast cancer. My research has the potential for transformative impact in multiple fields, including regenerative medicine and oncology, where improved diagnostics and therapeutic strategies are urgently needed.
