Johannes Scharwies

I am currently a postdoctoral scholar in Biology studying how plant roots sense water in their environment and regulate new growth in response to spatial water distribution in soils. Prior to joining Stanford in 2018, I obtained an undergraduate degree in Plant Biotechnology in Germany and both a Masters by Research and PhD in Plant Physiology in Australia. I am particularly interested in water relations of plants, since many processes need to be carefully controlled to avoid desiccation and allow plants to grow in very different environments on this planet. I enjoy working with students and helping them to explore the fascinating world of plants. I am using the PFP program as an opportunity to learn more about the work at a teaching focused institution to allow me to find a work environment that suits my interests. Outside of work I enjoy riding my bicycle, cooking and growing plants for fun.
