Director of RAISE Doctoral Fellowship Program
Joanne Tien
Joanne joined VPGE's office in 2022 where they serve as Director of the RAISE (Research, Action, and Impact through Strategic Engagement) Doctoral Fellowship. Joanne leads programming to support doctoral students in connecting their research and scholarship to community engagement, social action, and positive impact. Prior to joining VPGE, Joanne served as Senior Program Director of Engaged Scholarship at Stanford's Haas Center for Public Service, where they oversaw the Public Service Scholars Program, the Graduate Public Service Fellowship, and the Community-Based Research Fellowship Program.
Joanne completed their PhD and MA in the Critical Studies of Race, Class, and Gender in Education at the University of California, Berkeley and their BA at Pomona College. Their research focuses on how teachers and students navigate the tensions within progressive, critical, and social justice pedagogies, including participatory action research. Prior to graduate school, Joanne was a classroom teacher.
Outside of work, Joanne has been involved in various community organizations and advocacy efforts to address issues related to labor, housing, and education. Joanne is inspired by the work of Paulo Freire and Grace Lee Boggs, among others. For fun, they enjoy indoor gardening, biking, traveling, camping, and other outdoor activities.
