Dorothy Tovar is a PhD candidate, and NSF Fellow, co-advised between the Department of Microbiology & Immunology and Ecology & Evolution program. Her thesis investigates antiviral immune responses in bats, to understand their ability to host and transmit viruses deadly to humans, including Ebola and SARS. Dorothy received her BS degree in microbiology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she was honored with the university's 21st Century Leader Award. At Stanford, Dorothy has co-founded initiatives to support PhD students of color, including the Stanford Black Bioscience Organization (SBBO), and the Diversity Center of Representation and Empowerment (D-CORE).
