Calvin Van Zytveld

My project probes the co-constitutive relationship between music production and copyright law. How has music production shaped copyright law and how has copyright law affected musical expression? What does recorded music reveal about the past? My research engages discourses from musicology and legal studies while also drawing on comparative literature and intellectual history to explore the cultural forces that orbit modern music production. I hope to offer new ways to listen critically to recordings—to hear in old records the weight of history.
