Brenda Velasco

Brenda is a PhD candidate in Immunology. She received her BS in Biochemistry from California State University, Northridge. Brenda studies the bone marrow microenvironment, in the context of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, in Judith Shizuru’s Lab. Her research uses mouse models of blood and immune disease to identify therapies that specifically target the bone marrow cells involved in transplant rejection. Outside of research, Brenda is passionate about mentoring first-generation/low-income (FLI), high school, and community college students from underserved backgrounds. She is excited to help students gain access to higher education, while supporting them with resources needed to succeed in graduate school.
