Brandon Reynante

Social and environmental concerns associated with climate disruption have created an urgent need for humanity to collectively transform our existing socio-technical systems, such as energy, food, and transportation. However, several cognitive barriers, including perceived psychological distance and feelings of helplessness, hinder effective action. Educational interventions that engage people in “design fiction”—an emerging practice that integrates engineering design and science fiction writing to create realistic renderings of imagined future worlds—may overcome these barriers. My work integrates theories, insights, and methods from engineering, learning sciences, psychology, and fiction writing to investigate how we might create “design fiction” learning experiences that empower people to envision, explore, and enact more sustainable climate futures.
