Alexander Mejía

Alex (he/they) is an ethnographic media artist and PhD candidate in the Graduate School of Education. Their dissertation is an ethnography focused on the development of language and identity among Maya-Mam youth navigating the schools, neighborhoods, and workplaces of East Oakland. Alex’s research methods include community-based art practices, including narrative film, documentary film, and video art installations with Maya-Mam communities in Oakland and San Juan Atitán, Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Alex’s educational background includes an AA in Liberal Arts from Solano Community College, a BA in Latinx Studies, and an MA in English from San Francisco State University.
