CCSRE: Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity Emerging Scholars Graduate Fellowship

CCSRE Emerging Scholars Graduate Fellowships are for outstanding doctoral students who are interested in the study of the meanings, processes, and consequences of race, ethnicity and inequality. CCSRE-ES Graduate Fellowships are three-year awards for doctoral students newly admitted by a degree program. Prospective fellows are nominated by the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (CCSRE) Affiliated Faculty during the admissions season. The fellowship provides the opportunity to meet on a regular basis with the faculty members, scholars, undergraduates, and graduate students who comprise the interdisciplinary community at CCSRE. The first fellowships were awarded for the 2008-09 academic year.

Nominees must be:

• interested in pursuing research projects on how race, ethnicity, and inequality shape society and individual experience
• outstanding applicants newly admitted by a degree program that offers doctoral degrees
• matriculating in autumn of the following year
• nominated by a CCSRE Affiliated Faculty Member

Nomination process

Awards will be approved by the Graduate Fellowships Faculty Advisory Committee (GFFAC), a university-wide faculty committee that reviews VPGE-administered Stanford fellowships. GFFAC decisions will be made in mid-March. Offers of the CCSRE-GF to recipients will be coordinated between CCSRE, VPGE, and the admitting degree program shortly thereafter.

Fellowship Terms

To complement the academic requirements and recruitment needs of different disciplines, several configurations of the CCSRE-ES Graduate Fellowship have been approved. The most common configurations are listed below, however, on occasion, students may be offered a fellowship configuration that differs from the examples provided and this would be noted in the student's offer letter.

Standard Three-Year Fellowship

The standard three-year (12 quarter) fellowship provides support for four quarters each year. Fellows receive a stipend and tuition support for minimum full-time enrollment. The 2026-27 stipend level for VPGE-administered fellowships is set at $58,500 ($14,625 per quarter).

Modified Three-Year Fellowship (Graduate School of Education)

All newly admitted Graduate School of Education (GSE) CCSRE Fellows are offered an 11-quarter modified configuration of the award. All GSE CCSRE Fellows who are offered the modified CCSRE configuration receive maximum tuition (11-18 units) for the first three quarters and minimum full-time tuition (8-10 units) for the next eight quarters of the CCSRE Fellowship. They receive the CCSRE stipend for all 11 quarters.
