Learn to assess your core leadership strengths and areas for development to become an effective manager/leader. In each session of this comprehensive workshop, there will be a substantial experiential component.
Session 1: Performance Under Pressure
- Identify personality-based needs for involvement, control and connection, and how these needs affect our interpersonal behaviors
- Understand how interpersonal competence can influence working relationships, hinder productivity, or limit overall career satisfaction
- Explore how mismatches in these needs may affect both leadership and team performance during times of stress
- Learn how to minimize these potential difficulties through self-management, self-coaching and soliciting feedback from others
Session 2: 360 Degree Leadership Assessment
- Introduce the 360 Degree Assessment tool and help students understand how to use their individual results
- Learn about inherent biases in multi-rater assessments
- Target individual learning objectives for each student based upon their results
- Focus on perception rather than intention in analyzing behavior
- Discuss parameters of behavioral experiments and possible options for students to pursue with various assessment results
Session 3: Situational Leadership and Change
- Explore our personal tendencies in reacting to change
- Learn barriers and enhancers to change
- Discuss how to overcome personal resistance to change
- Learn practical tools to help analyze the readiness level of your team members and identify the most productive management style for each readiness level
- Learn how successful leaders evaluate each of their team members independently in relation to the tasks they give them and how they modify their management styles accordingly
Virtually all graduate students will eventually find themselves managing and leading others whatever career they pursue. Being an effective manager/leader requires hard work and training. Participants take three behavioral assessments designed to identify their ability to self-manage, develop others, think strategically, influence and exert power, build relationships and teams, and achieve results. As part of the assessment process, participants also receive confidential input from colleagues, peers, and advisors (of their choosing) through an online 360-degree feedback instrument. Then in three, three-hour workshops, participants learn their results and engage in experiential exercises and discussions aimed at learning practical tools for increasing their personal leadership effectiveness. The workshop focuses on three core areas of understanding:
- How do your interpersonal needs affect your behavior and how you build relationships, and how can you work most effectively with people whose needs differ from yours?
- How are you perceived by others in terms of thinking strategically, influencing others, building relationships, achieving results?
- How do you handle changing circumstances and how should you work with (or manage) others who have very different strengths and challenges?
Open and relevant to graduate students at any stage in any discipline or degree. Space is limited. Due to the workshop's interactive format, full participation in all three sessions is required.
If you are accepted to this workshop you must confirm your place by submitting a Student Participation Fee Agreement, which authorizes VPGE to charge $50 to your Stanford bill – only if you do not fully participate in the event. Leadership from the Inside Out will take place on May 2, 4, & 7 from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Due to the workshop's interactive format, full participation in all three sessions is required.
