Leadership from the Inside Out: Know Yourself Before Leading Others

Learn to assess your core leadership strengths and areas for development to become an effective manager/leader. In each session of this comprehensive workshop, there will be a substantial experiential component.

Learning Objectives:

Session 1: Performance Under Pressure

  • Identify personal needs for involvement, control and connection, and how these needs affect interpersonal behaviors
  • Understand how interpersonal competence influences working relationships, hinders productivity, or limits overall career satisfaction
  • Explore how mismatches in these needs may affect both leadership and team performance during times of stress
  • Learn to minimize these difficulties through self-management, self-coaching and getting feedback from others

Session 2: How Others See You

  • Introduce 360 Degree Assessment tool and help students understand how to use their feedback
  • Review inherent biases in multi-rater assessments
  • Focus on perception rather than intention in analyzing behavior
  • Target individual learning objectives for each student based on their results
  • Practice peer coaching and behavior experiments, as two vehicles for students to improve leadership based on their 360 feedback

Session 3: Improve Your Leadership

  • Review several specific leadership models, and how emotional intelligence affects successful leadership
  • Gain practical tools to assess your team members’ readiness and identify the most productive management style for each readiness level
  • Discover each student’s most commonly used leadership styles
  • Learn how successful leaders adapt their leadership based on the situation or context

Program Description

Almost all graduate students will eventually find themselves managing and leading others, whatever career they pursue. Being an effective manager/leader requires hard work and training. Participants take three behavioral assessments designed to identify their ability to self-manage, develop others, think strategically, influence and exert power, build relationships and teams, and achieve results. As part of the assessment process, participants also receive confidential input from colleagues, peers, and advisors (of their choosing) through an online 360-degree feedback instrument. Then in three, three-hour workshops, participants learn their results and engage in experiential exercises and discussions aimed at learning practical tools for increasing their personal leadership effectiveness. The workshop focuses on three core areas of understanding:

  1. How do your interpersonal needs affect your behavior and how you build relationships, and how can you work most effectively with people whose needs differ from yours?
  2. How are you perceived by others in terms of thinking strategically, influencing others, building relationships, achieving results?
  3. How do you handle changing circumstances and how should you lead / work with others who have very different strengths and challenges?


Open and relevant to graduate students at any stage in any discipline or degree. Space is limited. Due to the workshop's interactive format, full participation in all three sessions is required.

If you are accepted to this workshop you must confirm your place by submitting a Student Participation Fee Agreement, which authorizes VPGE to charge $50 to your Stanford bill – only if you do not fully participate in the event. You will receive a link to the Agreement and instructions if you are offered a place.
