VPGE Mission and Programs

Our Mission

The office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Education (VPGE) provides leadership for graduate education at Stanford. VPGE's mission is to help assure that Stanford remains at the forefront of graduate education, providing ever better educational experiences for students. We support and enhance the schools and programs that have primary responsibility for organizing and delivering graduate education.

  • Administer university-wide graduate fellowship programs
  • Advance graduate student diversity
  • Foster cross-school learning opportunities: Interdisciplinary learning, leadership and professional development
  • Coordinate and guide university-wide graduate policy
  • Collect, analyze, and share data about graduate education

How We Do this

We do this by actively collaborating with Stanford’s schools, departments and central offices. Our role is additive and seeks to improve Stanford's already excellent graduate programs. We have a small staff that works with others across campus on programs to advance our priorities.

  • Convene and connect people and departments
  • Consider proposals for projects with other departments and organizations
  • Serve as a clearinghouse for information and resources
  • Administer a small number of projects directly
  • Encourage students to take charge of their own education—setting goals, learning, advocating for themselves

These are programs and funds we directly administer. For information about other resources on campus, explore the sections of our Web site for current students and for faculty and staff.

All VPGE forms, applications and policy memos are collected on one page for easy reference.
