About STANDOUT - Centers of Influence Recruitment Retreat

Stanford University has a commitment to increasing the diversity of our graduate student body as we educate and train the next generation of global leaders. The STANDOUT-COI Recruitment Retreat is a two-day program that aims to support program directors, faculty, and administrators that work with diverse undergraduates in preparation for doctoral studies. As a participant, you will have the opportunity to hear from Stanford faculty, staff, and current graduate students about PhD studies at Stanford and take the information that you learn back to your students. You will also have the opportunity to inform Stanford of how to best partner with your program to ensure recruitment success. Sessions will include topics such as:

  • An overview of Stanford's doctoral programs and resources for diverse populations
  • How applications are reviewed at Stanford
  • What makes an application competitive
  • What makes a competitive statement of purpose
  • Ideal recommendation letters
  • Your role in the recruitment and application process

Event Information

The STANDOUT Centers of Influence Recruitment Retreat will begin at 1:00pm on Thursday, October 7th and end at 3:00pm on Friday, October 8th. Stanford will provide:

  • Accommodations on Thursday, October 7th at the Stanford Terrace Inn (double occupancy - you will be paired with another attendee). Participants will be given the option of making single room reservations (if space is available), but Stanford will cover only half of the cost.
  • Dinner on Thursday October 7th and lunch on Friday October 8th (breakfast is provided at the hotel)

A $35 registration fee and travel expenses are the responsibility of the attendee. Participation will be limited to space available. Registration will be on a first come, first served basis, so register early.

Participating Stanford organizations will include the PhD Programs in Biosciences in the School of Medicine, the School of Business, the School of Humanities and Sciences (Humanities, Social Sciences, & Natural Sciences), the School of Engineering, and the School of Education.

6:00pm — 8:00pm Dinner

Friday, October 8th
8:00am – Noon Workshops
Noon – 1:00pm Lunch
1:00pm – 3:00pm Workshops

Objectives

  • Expose those who help prepare diverse undergrads for doctoral education to the opportuntities and research at Stanford
  • Provide information on what makes a competitve Stanford graduate application
  • Provide information that will assist you in your role as an advisor to students interested in doctoral studies
  • Promote awareness of diversity among Stanford students, faculty, and staff
  • Promote graduate study access to students coming from diverse social and educational backgrounds
  • Increase the number of underrepresented minority graduate students at Stanford

Who Should Attend?

  • Graduate school prep program administrators (i.e. McNair and MARC) - limit of 1 representative per school program
  • Faculty and staff that advise or support diverse undergraduates interested in graduate study
  • Participation will be limited to space available. Registration will be on a first come, first served basis.

Registration

How to register:

Step 1: Sign up and pay your registration fee of $35. Cancelled registrations will be charged $10.

Step 2: Complete the Pre-Registration Survey. Registration is on a first come, first served basis and space is limited. Your registration will not be considered complete until you fill out the Pre-Registration Survey.

Step 3: Receive official notification confirming your space for the program. This e-mail will not be sent until the registration fee has been paid and the Pre-Registration Survey has been completed. All hotel reservations for confirmed participants will be made through Stanford University.

When we reach our limit for automated registration the registration link below will stop working, although there will be a few more slots available. Contact graddiversity@stanford.edu to be placed on the wait list and you will be contacted by September 7th if space is available.
